The Big Walk is a project run by the Foundation for Youth Development, which will see the founders of FYD walk the 3000km Te Araroa trail, joined by groups of young people at each leg of the walk.  On 30 November, one group left from the bottom of the South Island, the other from the top of the North Island, and they plan to meet in Wellington on 1 February 2010.

The Big Walk will pass through the Southern Rangitikei, leaving Wanganui on 20 January and arriving in Levin on 23 January.  Council’s Leisure Plan group is planning to join them at some stage during their trek through the Rangitikei, and members of the public are most welcome to join in.

Rangitikei Pools

Get down to your local pool and enjoy the free Family Fun days.  Marton Swimshed and Hunterville Pool are holding two free days - Monday 25 January to coincide with Wellington Anniversary Day and Waitangi Day, February 6.  Taihape is holding a ‘Show Madness Day’ (free admission for families) on Saturday 30 January.

Funding from the Whanganui Community Foundation has allowed the Rangitikei Pools to hold these free Family Fun days, so please get out there and enjoy a great family day at the pool!

Rangitikei Libraries – the place to be this school holidays.

The Rangitikei District Libraries in Bulls, Marton, and Taihape continue to be very popular since the introduction of free high speed internet.  There has been so much demand for the computers waiting lists have been introduced to ensure everybody gets their turn.  If you haven’t been into the libraries lately come on in and try out our new computers.  They offer a great way to keep in touch with friends and family as they all have Skype installed and come complete with webcams and headsets.  If you don’t know what Skype is - come in and find out!

We have school holiday programmes running at all three libraries – the theme for these holidays is ‘A Town Odyssey’.  Sessions at the Marton library are each Tuesday and Thursday from 10am-11am; Bulls library is holding sessions each Tuesday and Thursday from 2pm-3pm, and Taihape library sessions will be held on Thursday 21st and 28th January, from 11am-1pm.  For more information, please contact your local library.

Don’t forget you can look for books, magazines, DVD’s, or CD’s you are interested in through our website www.rangitikeilibrary.org.nz where you can also see monthly new books lists and find out what is happening in the libraries.
