Volunteer Rural Fire Fighters

E-mail Print PDF

Rural Fire Fighters are volunteers that fight and prevent fires in the rural areas, forests and hills of the Rangitikei District.

All Fire Fighters are trained in a range of skills including:
• fire-fighting techniques
• radio operations
• first aid
• navigation
• pump operation
• Civil Defence rescue techniques

Volunteering for a Fire Force is likely to be hot and hard work, but there's also great camaraderie and satisfaction in learning how to fight fires to save property and lives.

The official fire season runs from 1st December to 31st April.  During this time, Fire Force volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Volunteers average about 10 emergency call outs a year around the District.

There are two Fire Forces within the Rangitikei, one located in Marton and the other at Koitiata.  Training commitments vary between the two Forces but in general the commitment is weekly during summer and fortnightly over winter.

If you are interested in becoming a Rural Fire Force volunteer then please contact council on 3270099.  The minimum age for Volunteers is 18, an average level of fitness is required, all welcome.
