Draft Taihape Memorial Park Management Plan
Introduction
The Draft Taihape Memorial Park Management Plan (Part Two) should be read in conjunction with the Draft Recreational Parks and Reserves Management Plan (Part One). In essence, the Part One Plan requires Council:
- To promote and encourage the use of Memorial Park for a range of recreation activities, and
- To protect the open space character of Memorial Park to enchance the recreational amenity.
Council will achieve this through the general Part One policies:
-To encourage community participation in the planning, development, management and maintenance of Taihape Memorial Park.
- To maintain and develop recreational facilities at Taihape Memorial Park in close consultation with the local community to enchance the recreational values and opportunities.
- To encourage maximum use of Taihape Memorial Park by a range of different groups.
- To ensure as far as practical, the safety of users at Taihape Memorial Park.
This Management Plan outlines Council's plans for the future development of Taihape Memorial Park and suggests further policies that will be applied specifically to Taihape Memorial Park.
- To preserve, protect and enchance ecological values of the native bush.
- To preserve the character of the Memorial Park Gates, Plaque and Garden.
Particularly, the Council-owned facilities at Taihape Memorial Park (particularly the Grandstand and the swimm pool) are increasingly past their "use-by-date". Council needs to find an affordable solution for the Taihape town and district ratepayers that will maximise the recreational amenity of the Park.
Council has been supporting the Taihape Leisure Centre group (operating under the Taihape Community Development Trust) to develop the Park in line with a three-phase site master plan that has been well-discussed within the town and surrounding areas.

Although Council will not contribute to a capital programme, it will continue to provide ongoing, operational costs in line with current Council budgets. This could be in the form of a grant to a community group that will manage the Park on behalf of Council and the ratepayers.
