Gary Johnson
Gary Johnson is one of those people who sees something that needs doing and simply gets on with it.
For the past 15 years, Gary has been a familiar and valued contributor to the Taihape community, giving his time and energy to a number of organisations and initiatives that help make the town a better place to live.
Many people know Gary through his involvement with Neighbourhood Support, the Taihape Community Development Trust, and the local Foodbank. Whether it's organising groceries, delivering food parcels, or lending a hand wherever it's needed, Gary is someone the community can rely on. He approaches every task with a willingness to help and a genuine desire to support others.
In 2019, Gary identified an opportunity to create something special for the people of Taihape. Wanting to provide a space where both young people and adults could learn practical skills, be creative, and spend time together, he established the Whānau Hobby Hut.
Since then, Gary has dedicated countless hours of his own time teaching woodwork and DIY repair skills to people of all ages. The Whānau Hobby Hut has become more than just a place to work with timber and tools. It is a place where people can learn, build confidence, share knowledge, and connect with others in the community.
Gary Johsnon was supported by his family for his Community Volunteer Award presentation, with some travelling from as far as Tauranga for the occasion.
What makes Gary's contribution particularly special is that he never seeks recognition for what he does. He is known as a lovely, polite, and helpful person who is always willing to lend a hand. His quiet dedication and generosity have had a positive impact on many people throughout Taihape.
His commitment to serving his community is a wonderful example of what volunteering is all about.
Gary is thoroughly deserving of this recognition, and we are incredibly grateful for everything he continues to do for Taihape. His commitment to serving his community is a wonderful example of what volunteering is all about.
Congratulations, Gary.
