Maatariki Veuger, Rangitikei’s representative on the Tuia Programme said it's been "a journey" and her advice to anyone thinking of joining this programme is to "be mature, be ready for some deep korero, and be open-minded".

In saying that "I love it and wouldn't change a thing!"

The Tuia programme is a one on one mentoring programme between rangatahi (young person) and the Mayor to encourage and enhance leadership skills. The relationship also provides both partners with the opportunity to gain a deeper insight into inter-generational issues, cultural values and experiences.

Mayor Andy Watson said "Maata is awesome! She is a future leader with a fantastic knowledge of what is appropriate on the marae and the issues facing youth. Yes it is a two way street and hopefully I am able to introduce her to the world of local government and business.

"Iwi are crying out for future leaders, they will drive the financial future of our region and if Maata, wants she has the ability to be in that space. I am aware that all too often I make mistakes of protocol or tikanga and she can nudge me in the right direction.

"With regards to the Tuia program the Rangitikei is a relatively new kid on the block but what I have seen as benefits in other regions has been empowering."
