Government pauses Head Start until 2027
Mayor Andy Watson says the Government's decision to pause its Head Start process is sensible, but frustrating after councils were asked to work to what he says were unrealistic deadlines.

"The Government asked councils to move incredibly quickly on what could be once-in-a-generation reform. Councils responded by putting significant staff time, effort and ratepayer money into meeting those deadlines, only to now be told decisions won't be made until 2027.
"I absolutely understand the frustration of those councils that submitted Head Start proposals and are now left in limbo. This was always too important to rush, and taking more time to get it right is sensible. But that time should have been built into the process from the beginning.
"For Rangitīkei, today's announcement doesn't directly change our position. Neither we nor the other councils in the Horizons Region submitted a Head Start proposal.
"Instead, we'll use the additional time to continue working together on opportunities for shared services, greater collaboration and what possible future reform could look like for our region.
"Our community has already told us that retaining a strong local voice, understanding the financial implications and protecting local representation matter. We'll seek direct discussions with the Minister to make sure those views are heard as the Government considers its next steps.”
