Rangitīkei District Council adopts Annual Plan 2026/27

Recognising the significant cost pressures facing residents, and amid ongoing local government reforms, Council has worked to reduce costs while maintaining current levels of service.
“I understand rates increases are difficult to absorb, but I want to assure you that Council continues to strive for the best possible balance between affordability, delivering essential services, and the long-term needs of Rangitīkei,” says Rangitīkei Mayor, Andy Watson.
The Annual Plan confirms Council's work programme for the year ahead, including the renovations of the Marton Swim Centre, continued redevelopment of the Taihape Town Hall and Community Hub, critical repairs to the Taihape–Napier Road, improving Marton’s water supply, ongoing maintenance and renewals across the district, as well as working towards transitioning water services to Central Districts Water by 1 July 2027.
"These are long-term investments that will shape the resilience and growth of Rangitīkei for decades to come. While delays can be frustrating, Council's responsibility is to deliver projects well and in a way that reduces long-term risk and cost for our district," adds Mayor Andy.
The impact of ongoing local government reforms was also acknowledged, particularly the uncertainty surrounding the Government's proposed Simplifying Local Government reforms and rates capping.
"Council is expected to plan responsibly for the future, but that's difficult when we're still waiting on key decisions from Wellington,” Mayor Andy said. "This uncertainty creates extra work and pressure for councils across the country, and Rangitīkei is no exception.
“My thanks go to my fellow Councillors and Council staff. The pace of change facing local government is significant, but despite ongoing challenges, I am confident Rangitīkei is well positioned to face the future with confidence, care, and optimism.”
At the meeting, Council also adopted amendments to its Revenue and Financing Policy and Rates Remission Policy. These documents will now be finalised, and they will be available on Council’s website as soon as possible.
The Schedule of Fees and Charges for 2026/27 was adopted at the Council meeting on 21 May 2026.
