Governance Advisor
The Opportunity
Rangitīkei District Council is looking for an experienced and highly organised Governance Advisor to lead our democracy function and help ensure the effective operation of local government in our district.
This is a stand-alone role with broad responsibility for supporting Council, committees, elected members, and community boards. You'll be at the centre of local decision-making, ensuring governance processes run smoothly, statutory obligations are met, and elected members receive high-quality support and advice.
This is a full-time permanent role based in Marton.
About you
You're an experienced governance professional with a strong understanding of local government processes and legislation. Organised, adaptable, and detail-focused, you excel at managing competing priorities, providing trusted governance advice, and building positive relationships with elected members, staff, and community stakeholders. With excellent communication skills, sound judgement, and a high level of integrity, you take pride in delivering professional, accurate, and customer-focused outcomes.
What you will do
- Manage Council and committee meeting schedules, notifications, agendas and minutes
- Administer community grant and funding processes
- Maintain governance systems and records, including action and resolution tracking
- Work collaboratively with staff and elected members to achieve good governance outcomes
- Support compliance with legislation including the Local Government Act 2002 and Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 (LGOIMA)
What you will bring
- At least 5 years’ experience in the local government sector and/or experience in working within a governance role
- Sound knowledge of the Local Government Act 2002 and the Local Government Information and Meetings Act 1987
- A high level of attention to detail, ability to take accurate minutes, organise and priories work effectively, and meet deadlines
- Excellent knowledge and competence in the use office Microsoft Office suite
- Flexibility to work occasional evenings to support Council and committee meetings.
