Taihape Eagle Street building

October 27, 2020

Rangitīkei District Council has granted an extension to KiwiRail to allow KiwiRail more time to remove a dangerous building in Taihape.

Following a fire in September, a ‘Dangerous Notice’ was issued on a goods shed on Eagle Street building which is owned by KiwiRail and on rail land.

Following the fire, KiwiRail immediately fenced off the facility and engaged air monitoring services for asbestos. Regular air samples are being taken from the property. To date all air tests have returned a negative result for the presence of airborne asbestos.

KiwiRail has advised that it will carefully manage the demolition given the proximity to the busy operational rail line and the presence of asbestos in the building structure.

KiwiRail has commenced work to prepare the building for demolition and expects the structure to be demolished and the materials removed by asbestos specialists by 1 December.
