In December 2020 Council adopted a new Multi-dog Permit bylaw. This bylaw is an amendment to our Control of Dogs Bylaw.

The bylaw states that any urban residential property, as identified in Council's District Plan, which has or will have more than two dogs at one property at 30 June 2021 will need to apply for a Multi-dog Permit by 30 June 2021.

All dog owners in the district have been sent a letter from Council advising the new Multi-dog Permit Bylaw is now being implemented.

What does this mean for dog owners?

Every dog owner that has more than two dogs and lives in an urban residential zone will need to apply for a Multi-dog Permit. It does not apply to rural dog owners.

How do you apply for a permit?

The Multi-dog Permit can be found below or can be obtained at Councils libraries and the Marton and Taihape Offices. Dog owners will need to fill in the application form and submit to Council, it cannot be done online yet as the form needs to be signed.

How much does the permit cost?

Multi-Dog permits cost $30 including gst. The permit lasts for three years and renewal letters will be sent when the permit is due to expire.

As this is the first year Council is implementing the Multi-dog Bylaw a discount on first time permits have been given.

  • If you currently have more than 2 dogs and apply before 30 June 2021.
There will be no fee and your permit will last until 30 June 2024.
  • If you currently have more than 2 dogs and apply after 30 June 2021.
You will have to pay $30 and you permit will last until 30 June 2024.

The expiry date for all permits is the 30 June. This date aligns with your dog registration fees.

For example: If you apply now for a Multi-dog Permit in March and meet the criteria then your permit is from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2024.

What happens if one of your dogs die or you no longer have more than two dogs on your property?

If one of your dogs die or you no longer have more than two dogs on your property during the three year period the permit remains active until the expiry date. You don’t get a refund.
