Archives Central Project

What is the project?

The Archives Central Project combines the region’s city, district and regional councils’ archives into one central database. The pre-1989 archives of the Horizons Regional Council and Rangitikei, Manawatu, Tararua, Horowhenua District Councils have been relocated into a purpose built facility in Feilding - the Archives Central Repository, at 40 Bowen Street, Feilding. A further project started this year to address the long term issues of preservation and access of ‘born digital ‘records.

What is in the Archives Central database?

The database offers comprehensive searching of lists and finding aids of the archives of Wanganui District Council, Palmerston North City Council, Horizons Regional Council, Tararua District Council, Manawatu District Council and Rangitikei District Council. Pre-1989 correspondence files from Horowhenua District Council are in the database; the remainder of this collection is expected to be in the database by December 2013. Ruapehu District’s archives will be added in early 2013.

When will the Rangitikei District Council archives be available to search?

The Rangitikei District Council archives listing is now available on the Archives Central website.

The Archives Centre repository in Feilding opened to the public on 5 October 2012. Pre-1989 archives from the Rangitikei District Council are housed in this repository.
