The progress result for the Rangitikei District Council by-election that closed at midday on Friday 12 April 2024 is outlined below:

This result is based upon the counting of approximately 90% of the returned votes and does not include special votes and ordinary votes returned today that are still in transit to the Electoral Officer.There are approximately 51 ordinary votes in transit to the Electoral Officer and 1 special vote to be processed and they will be included in the Final result which is expected to be released later today

Nominations for the by-election closed at midday today (15 February 2024).

Council's Deputy Electoral Officer, Carol Gordon advised that "four nominations were received which means there will be an election for this ward.


Rangitīkei District Council are required to hold a by-election for the Southern Ward, following the resignation of Cr Jarrod Calkin on Thursday, 7 December 2023.

Standing for election

To stand as a Southern Ward Councillor, candidates must be:

  • A New Zealand citizen (by birth or naturalisation ceremony; and
  • Enrolled as a Parlimentary elector (anywhere in New Zealand); and
  • Nominated by two electors whose name appear on the electoral roll within the respective ward the candidate is standing for.

Nominations must be in the hands of the Electoral Officer/Official before 12 noon, Thursday, 15 February 2024. Read more information specific to this election.
