If you didn't enrol by 1 August, your voting papers have been damaged, or you are on the unlisted roll for personal reasons, you may need to cast a special vote.


FAQs

Voting opens Tuesday 9 September - your voting documents will be delivered by post by the 23 September. If you don't receive your documents in the post by 23 September, call Council to arrange to make a special vote.

People can put their vote in the post or in an orange bin. 7 October 2025 is the last day for posting vote by mail. After this date votes must be returned to council’s secure ballot boxes.

If you are going on holiday and cannot wait for your voting documents to arrive in the mail you can contact us to make a special vote.

We use the First-past-the-post (FPP) system in Rangitīkei. The candidate (or candidates if there are more than one position available) with the most votes wins.

It's estimated that there are 12,865 eligible voters in Rangitīkei.

As of 30 April 2025, there are 11,236 people enrolled to vote. That's 87.34 percent of eligible voters.

  • General roll = 9,551
  • Māori roll = 1,685

In the 2022 local elections, 5,063 people voted in the district across all wards, the mayoralty and community boards. This equated to a turnout of 46 percent, which was down slightly from the 2019 elections (46.79 percent). This is still above the national average for local elections, which was 41 percent in 2022.
