Rangitīkei Youth Council brings together young people aged 15 to 24 who live in - or have a strong connection to - the Rangitīkei District.

As a youth councillor, you represent Rangitīkei rangatahi. You can help shape Council decisions and support projects and events across the district.

At a glance

  • Commitment: Around one hour per week, plus a two-three hour meeting every month from March-November.

Youth councillors bring the views and experiences of rangatahi into Council conversations.

As a member, you may:

  • talk with young people about what matters to them,
  • advise councillors and Council staff on youth matters,
  • read and discuss Council information,
  • contribute to consultations, plans and projects,
  • help organise community activities and events,
  • volunteer in the community,
  • recognise youth achievement and service,
  • develop ideas for youth-led initiatives.

You will not be expected to know how Council works before you join. We will help you learn along the way.

Being part of the Youth Council is an opportunity to make connections, build confidence and create positive change for Rangitīkei.

You can:

  • strengthen your leadership, communication and teamwork skills
  • learn more how local government decisions are made
  • meet councillors, Council staff and community leaders
  • explore career and volunteering opportunities
  • receive support for youth-led ideas
  • gain experience you can include in your CV
  • receive a certificate recognising your participation and community service
  • be part of a supportive group that values rangatahi voice and mana.

Kai is provided at meetings.

You can apply if you:

  • are aged 15 to 24
  • live in the Rangitīkei District, or have a strong connection through whakapapa, school, work, volunteering or community involvement
  • want to listen to and represent the views of other young people
  • can take part in regular meetings and community activities.

We welcome rangatahi from all backgrounds, cultures, identities and circumstances. You may be studying, working, volunteering, looking for work or exploring what comes next.

Rangitīkei Youth Council runs from March to November.

Members usually commit:

  • around one flexible hour each week for reading, upskilling, and youth council admin,
  • two to three hours each month for meetings. In person attendance is preferred, but online options are available,
  • some additional time for agreed events or community projects.

We understand that school, study, work, whānau and other commitments can change. If you have concerns about the commitment, talk to us! We are open to working with you to manage the time involved.
