Getting around

When it comes to getting around town, biking and walking are fantastic options. With our small-town charm, it won't take long to travel from one end to the other on foot or by bike!

If you're planning to travel between towns within our District, driving is the simplest way to go. State Highway 1 provides convenient access, and you'll find free on-street parking available in every town.

Learn to drive

A New Zealand driver's licence can make getting around much easier. If you're looking to get your driver's licence, here are some options available to you:

National Driver Training Centre (NDTC)Primarily located in Feilding, NDTC provides a range of driver training options for licence classes 1 to 6, including a Defensive Driving course in Marton.
Awa Driver TrainingServing Whanganui, Marton, and Bulls, Awa Driver Training offers driving lessons to help you learn and get your driver's licence.
AA Mobile Unit (Marton)The AA Mobile Unit visits Marton Public Library, located at 31 High Street, on the second Thursday of every month for driving lessons.

AA Mobile Unit (Taihape)The AA Mobile Unit operates at Taihape Public Library, located at 1 Tui Street in Taihape. They are available on the second and fourth Monday of each month for driving lessons.

Public Transport

Horizons Regional Council provides a district-wide bus service, connecting towns from Palmerston North to Whanganui. These services include:

  • Taihape to Whanganui via Marton (and back): first Thursday of the month
  • Taihape to Palmerston North via Marton (and back): third Thursday of the month
  • Marton to Palmerston North (and back): Monday to Friday
