Dogs

We have around 4,630 dogs registered in the Rangitīkei District. We have Control of Dogs Bylaw and the Dog Control and Owner Responsibility Policy which sets out owner responsibilities, and how our animal control staff manage any issues.

We also have a Dog Owner Handbook written by our animal control team that you can browse or download for information.

There is also lots of handy information about being a Responsible Dog Owner here.

Barking dogs can be a nuisance.

If a neighbour’s dog is causing disturbances, try a friendly chat first. If that doesn’t work, consider involving Animal Control. In some cases, you may be able to resolve the issue yourself, some of these are outlined in this brochure.

If direct communication fails to resolve the issue, consider contacting local authorities:

  • Animal Control: Report the excessive barking, providing specific details about the frequency and duration. Call Rangitikei District Council on 0800 522 422.
  • SPCA: If you suspect animal neglect or abuse, contact the SPCA to report the situation. They can investigate and take appropriate action.

Remember, when reporting, be specific about the problem, the impact it’s having on you, and any relevant details about the dog’s living conditions.
